Although Shiryu is able to put names with faces, it’s the face that stands out to him more than the name. He is more likely to remember seeing someone before rather than hearing their name and it’s not just the face that allows him to remember. He can recall what was happening that day based on the emotion that was exhibited. This is how he is able to remember people he’s seen on the street and keeps track of just who might be from the area as opposed to those to might not be from around here.
Once he is aware of your name, however, he is able to keep the name together with the face. Even when it comes it identical twins, he is able to (most of the time) tell the difference between twins based on their faces. No one person’s face is exactly the same. Some have higher eyes, some have smaller noses, some even have an obtuse smile and for him, the best way to identify & remember faces are the expressions they make.

However, such a talent becomes wasted once Shiryu loses his eyesight. He is unable to read faces like he is used to; reliant on his other senses to be able to tell him how people are feeling, who they are and what is going on by the sound of their voice and the sounds around them. Although it can be offered to him to let someone touch their face, he will rightfully decline. He sees it, in his own way, as an invasion and would rather not be seen as disabled or be made to feel that way. He prefers to be treated as though nothing happened.
