I love writing a blind Shiryu. I love doing this only because there is a sense of bitterness in him when people take care of him. Although it isn’t as apparent in the show, in certain aspects you can see that he really curses himself for being blind. In episode 33 of the original series when he goes back to the five old peaks, he regrets Shunrei giving him medicine because he knows that won’t help him. There is bitterness when he’s training with the birds and he isn’t able to sync up his movements with them; he notices that he’s slower now than he was before and when his had his fight with Oukho and he noticed that Shiryu was scared of him. With that knowledge, he rejected fighting him the first time.
Shiryu being blind has always been something I like to roleplay because it allows me to get into his head more. If you poke him hard enough, he will allow his bitterness to slip out and he will become nasty. He beats himself up about self-inflicting his own disability and not being able to help the rest of the saints. He hates the fact that people pity him. He hates the fact that everyone wants to take care of him. He hates the fact that he isn’t the same person anymore.
He’s become very bitter and roleplaying an internally conflicted Shiryu just tears at my heart.
